Springwatch lives on and "nearly" an award

Springwatch might have finished on the tv, but its been very busy here. The bird feeders are emptying by the minute it seems. The baby woodpecker has fledged and despite the efforts of parent to show it how to drill for insects it just sits there waiting to be fed the contents of the peanut feeders. Numerous Tit families, various Finches and Sparrows seem to be everywhere and the Blackbird constantly forages in the mulch around my magnificent potted Hostas making a terrible mess, but no doubt dispensing with the ever present enemy - the Slug!

We were one of three finalists in the Destination Worcestershire Welcome Awards (our county tourism department) for the Best B&B in Worcestershire recently. Many of our guests voted for us to be nominated, for which we are very grateful. The awards were presented last Friday and we achieved Highly Commended, the winner being another of our Farm Stay colleagues, Tiltridge Vineyard B&B

We are very lucky and have an enormous amount of birdlife in and around the garden. We assume the local tawny owls have a brood to feed as we have heard them in the woods next to us during the day and there is much clamouring going on by the various Tit population, amongst others. Year round occupants are Woodpeckers - Green, and a voracious Greater Spotted Woodpecker family who devour the peanuts in the feeders in record time. Determined to get a photo we had to move the bird table on to the patio and lie in wait behind the bedroom curtain with camera at the ready. After two days this is as good as we are going to get with our simple digital camera.

This is a young tawny owl that I was able to snap in 2008 who had just dropped a rabbit he had caught that was nearly as big as himself. Haven't seen another one close up since, but we are regularly serenaded through the night, especially when there is a full moon.

This is our new blog and I will start off with our good news. Brian and I are delighted that our guests have voted for us in the Best Bed and Breakfast category of the Welcome to Worcestershire awards. Our thanks to you all for getting us to the final. Another finalist is one of our Farm Stay colleagues, Sandy from Tiltridge Vineyard, and we wish her the best of luck. Judging now follows and the winner will be announced on Friday 17 June at an event at the Malvern Three Counties showground on the first day of the Three Counties Show.

In the meantime Barbara will be at the Malvern showground next week with my colleagues from Farm Stay for the RHS Spring Gardening Show in the Gardeners Shopping Pavilion so do come along and say hello.
